Is it any surprise that some corners of the internet want to credit global conspiracies with deciding the French presidency?Foreign Archives

The world watched Sunday as French voters went to the polls in a presidential run-off election yesterday, with centrist Emmanuel Macron facing off against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen. When the dust settled, Macron had handily bested Le Pen before giving his victory speech at the Louvre.

While many in the international community breathed a sigh of relief that extreme nationalist, anti-immigrant politics had been rejected in France, others only saw signs of the Illuminati in Macron's win.

An immediate connection. Obvs.

The symbol of a pyramid has long been associated with the Illuminati, a fictitious shadowy group whose powerful members secretly control the wolrd. It is a known symbol within Freemasonry (which conspiracy theorists associate with the Illuminati). Some explain the group as responsible for the great seal on the back of the $1 bill.

The fact that Macron celebrated his victory in front of a pyramid gave conspiracy theorists and online jokers all the ammunition they needed to connect the imaginary dots.

"Macron chose the Louvre's pyramid to celebrate his victory. Coincidence? I think not."

"A wink at those who elected me."

During the campaign, tying Macron to the Illuminati was just one tactic that alt-right meme makers used to try and tarnish the former banker's image.

Sorry, internet, pyramids are just useful architectural structures and a cabal of the wealthiest people in the world who are instrumental in everything that happens from election results to terrorist attacks probably doesn't exist.

So maybe worry about something that's actually real. Like the Eye of Sauron that appeared behind Macron when he spoke.

Nah, that's probably not real either.
